For his first venture into full-length feature cinema, Zanussi chose the difficult genre of the psychological film. The film is based to the great extend in the director's personal experiences and also reflects his observation of the scientific world. The heroes of the film have their counterparts in certain personalities who are well known to the director. They are aware that Zanussi has molded his heroes after them, they have given help to the actors in some of the more complicated situations and advice to the director. A metropolitan member of the scientific elite visits an old friend and colleague who has retreated with his wife to a remote meteorological station, and tries to persuade him to return to the city. What has been keeping his friend in this Godforsaken place and what has made him renounce the fame and career which he enjoys himself? Will the two friends be able to rediscover their mutual understanding and the common language they once shared?
