Encourged by the success of Part I, Eisenstein immediately began shooting of Part II in February, 1945. Editing was completed in February 1946 and while Eisenstein was convalescing from a heart attack, the film was shown to Josef Stalin, who intensely disliked it. Subsequently, the film was banned by the Central Committee of the Communist Party, and was not publicly released until 1958. Like Ivan the Terrible Part I, Part II is another bravura creation, featuring lavish sets, incredble cinematography, and brilliant editing. It also contains two color sequences, used not for aesthetic reasons, but to enhance audience to the meaning of the scenes. Shortly after Ivan the Terrible Part II was banned Eisenstein in a secret meeting with Stalin was given clearance to begin production of Part III. Unfortunately, his health began to deteriorate, until finally, on February 11, 1948, he died of a heart attack and Ivan the Terrible Part III was never produced. Director: Eisenstein. Black and White. Country: Russia. (I.A.S. now located in Old McMillan 254.)
