This is the first installment of Eisenstein's monumental production of Ivan the Terrible. It was originally conceived as a three-part epic about the life and times of Ivan IV, the 16th Century ruler who first unified Russia. More than two years of research elapsed before the first filming of Part I and, in spite of its totalitarian bias, it is a stunning portrayal of the pomp and politics of Russia in the late Middle Ages. Although production commenced in April, 1943, the filming was temporarily halted by the Nai bombardment of Moscow, and it was not completed until December, 1944. The film was an instand success, and Eisenstein, and several of his collaborators were ararded a Stallin Prize. Director: Eisenstein. Black and White. Country: Russia. (I.A.S. now located in Old McMillan 254.)
