A study of a poor, imperious, eccentric former law student, Raskoinikov, who believes that he is a special kind of Superman - exempt from moral law. Driven by [a] desperate need to respect himself, he kills an old pawnbroker and her sister with an axe. Only at the end of the film, after his vital duel with the criminal investigator, can he confess his crime, atone for it through suffering, accept the love of a former prostitute, and finally take responsibility and fully embrace life.
