Based on an early Chekhov novella, THE SHOOTING PARTY tells the story of a magistrate who, unable to admit his love for a woodsman's daughter, watches as she marries an estate manager and falls into a loveless affair with the estate's owner, a decadent count. In a fit of jealous passion, the magistrate kills the young woman. Then, abusing his judicial authority, he prosecutes her husband for the crime. The story, told in flashback, subtly reveals the truth about the magistrates guilt. Director: Emil Loteanu. Actors: Galina Belyayeva, Oleg Yankovsky. Color. Country: Russia. Subtitled.
