Robert Bresson`s first color film opens with a beautiful young woman leaping from the fifth story window to her death. Based on a novella by Dostoevsky, ""A Gentle Woman"" is a heartbreaking examination of love`s failure to unite two people. When the teenager wife of a pawnbroker suddenly and inexplicably commits suicide, her distraught husband tries to understand what could have led to such a desperate act. The story unfolds in flashbacks, revealing a pattern of miscommunication and abuse. The free-spirited, inquisitive teenager, known only as ""She,"" had married to escape poverty. Suffocated by her controlling, possessive husband, her gentle nature gradually grows defiant. Shortly after a reconciliation, she decides to end her life Director: Robert Bresson.
