"Crime and Punishment" following Dostoevski's novel, is a study of a poor imperious, eccentric former law school student, Raskolnikov, who believes that he is a special kind of superman-exempt from moral law. Driven by the desperate need to respect himself, Raskolnikov kills and old pawnbroker and her sister with an ax. Raskolnikov, portrayed in this film by Georgi Taratorkin as a tall, lean, handsome tormented-looking man who exereses worlds of emotion with his eyes and hands, is bosessed with guilt and dreams of being caught. Only at the end of the film after his vital duel with the criminal investigator, played without menace in brilliant paternal fashion by Innokenti Smoktunovsky, can he confess his crime, atone for it through suffering, accept the love of a former prostitute (the beautiful, fragile and spiritual Tatyana Bedova) and finally take responsibility and fully embrace life. Black and White. Country: Russia. Subtitled. (I.A.S. now located in Old McMillan 254.)
