" The Libro de buen amor, which dates to 1330, may be considered as the earliest Spanish literary masterpiece with a known author. Juan Ruiz, Archpriest of Hita, is a writer of considerable skill and complexity, as well as of some contradictions. His tale is about the amorous adventures of one protagonist, yet he continually digresses; his style is elegant and clearly educated, yet his tone and language indicate his hope for a wide audience; his purpose--given his clerical role--is to moralize against vice, yet he takes undeniable pleasure in describing sin and seems to occasionally condone it. In this superb period production, El Libro de buen amor is made immediately accessible; the charm which attracted medieval audiences attracts modern audiences as well, and the concepts of devout buen amor and carnal loco amor are quite recognizable in our own age of easier mortaliy. The production places special emphasis on the clear and accurate enunciation of Spanish verse." Director: Santos. Color. Country: Spain. No Subtitles.
