"Humberto Fuentes is a wealthy doctor whose wife has recently died. In spite of the advice of his children,he takes a trip to visit his former students who have been sent out to work in impoverished villages. His trip soon becomes a quest, politically awakening him when he finds out that one of his students was killed by guerillas. As he travels farther and farther from his comfortable life in the capital, he is confronted with the aftermath of a brutal civil war whose most tragic casualties are the indigenous people who have suffered rape, torture, and massacres at the hand of the enigmatic ""hombres armados"". Although the movie does not specify which country it refers to, it alludes to the civil wars in Guatemala and other Central American countries in the 1980`s as well as more the more recent conflict in Chiapas, Mexico. The film has a mythical or allegorical quality, but at the same time shows how a man`s eyes are opened to the violent reality of his own country. " Director: John Sayles.
