"Carmen and Gabriel have a six year old daughter, Ami, who is introverted but very perceptive. Carmen, influenced by her aging father, is obsessed with having a son to carry on the family name. Convinced that her second child will be a son, Carmen becomes paranoid and overprotective, which results in her mistreatment of Ami. The tragic outcome of Carmen`s harshness make this movie ideal for discussing child abuse in relation to crimes committed by children. It is also an excellent example of the importance given to male children in Hispanic culture. The second half of the movie, in which Ami is a reclusive teenager, shows the aftereffects of the tragedy and adds to the psychological depth of the characters. "
