"It`s 1943 in Italy and Loren, a recent widow, departs the suburbs of Rome to return to her home village. Traveling with her teenage daughter Brown, they walk, train, and ride mules, leary of the fighter planes and bombers that fill the skies.Discovering the village is occupied by Germans, they set up a house supplying food and shelter for the local citizenry. They meet Belmondo, a young farmer who falls for Loren, even as Brown falls for him.The village is barraged by the Allies, and Belmondo is taken prisoner, leaving Loren and Brown to seek shelter in a bombed-out church. Soon discovered by soldiers, they are both brutally raped and the two women are left in each other`s arms seeking solace in the mother/daughter bond to restore their sanity."
