"The main character of the story is a famous but nameless novelist. 'I write with my burned hand about the fire.' Neither the interviewer, her life-companion Malina, nor her lover, Ivan, understand what she means. The public applauds her lectures about literature, yet she cannot speak for herself. She writes hundreds of letters but never sends any. She doesn`t open her mail and eventually refuses all verbal communication. Nightmares about her relationship with her father further distance her from the world. The final crisis comes when she discovers that Ivan is having an affair. Her world literally goes up in flames. Neither Malina nor Ivan take her seriously until she one day disappears into the apartment walls. In the distance, a voice is heard: 'It was murder!'" Director: Werner Schroeter.
