Young Olga Ahrendt almost succeeded with her suicide -- she flung herself in front of a street car in despair over a miserable life, a desperation she shares with many during the postwar years. Thankfully Herr Sauerbruch is at the scene and, after a close all, orders Ahrendt to check in to his clinic: Sauerbruch is a college professor as well as a surgeon -- a famous doctor who not only helps his patients physically but offers them consolation of the soul as well. After he has brought Olga to his hospital, he determines during an investigation that her suicide attempt has a basis in serious physical illness. He takes up her case with intensity, albeit without neglecting the other patients whom he capably invests with a new will to live. And indeed: Olga Ahrendt shall be his next success story.
