"Cat and Mouwse" is the story of schoolboy Joachim Mahlke, living in Danzig during the Second World War. Mahlke is an object of mockery and much amusement at his school thanks to his exceptionally large Adam's apple; but this same feature, as narrator Pilenz relates, also makes Mahlke into something of a hero against his will and eventually leads to his downfall as well. Mahlke's fantastic and desperate attempts to deny and avenge his evidently grotesque anatomy culminate after a longer phase of development in a military career at sea. When he returns to his old school years later with an Iron Cross of Honor, Mahlke is forced to recognize that he has not yet been forgiven for his youthful attempt to steal the selfsame prize from a U-Boot commander during a school visit. He returns thus to the place of his first youthful successes, the half-submerged wreck of a Polish minesinker...Notes: based on the novel by Günter Grass. Director: Hans-Juergen Pohland. Color.
