"This movie follows the life of a young German woman, married to a soldier in the waning days of WWII. Fassbinder has tried to show the gritty life after the end of WWII and the turmoil of the people trapped in its wake. Maria is a powerful woman who knows how to use her feminity to achieve her goals. When her husband makes the sacrifice of imprisonment as punishment for a murder Maria accidentally commits, Maria becomes involved with a wealthy businessman in order to gain financial security for her and her husband in post-war Germany.
