Despite his unpopularity with the Queen and the Cabinet, Otto von Bismarck is called to join the Cabinet of King Wilhelm I at the request of War Minister von Roon. Bismarck quickly wins the King's trust while the Cabinet regards him with increasing disdain. Rudolf Virchow, the Prussian, pacifistic medical professor, stands out as Bismarck's staunchest critic. Eventually, Bismarck dissolves the Prussian Parliament and begins to collaborate with von Roon on reforming the army. He enters into an alliance with Austria against Denmark, which leads to a brief war between Germany and Denmark. Bismarck's troops emerge from the war as victors, not least on account of the Minister Moltke's strategic acumen. Still there are domestic attacks waged by Crown Prince Friedrich in the Parliament. When a war breaks out with Austria, Bismarck fights in vain against its continuation following a victory in battle. The King is obsessed with the goal of marching into Vienna. With the help of the Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm, who comes to Bismarck's aid for the first time, it is possible to implement the peace plan.
