The Basel-based chemical company Sirling is conducting genetic experiments that were once led by the husband-wife team Eva and Mark Lehmann. Eva has since left the project for conscientious reasons and has become the director of a summer camp for troubled teens at Lake Constance. She has also divorced her husband, who continues to work for the firm on Project 17. Mark learns that one of his colleagues has been conducting secret experiments at the request of their boss and that this colleague has succeeded in creating a new organism. When this lab creation escapes from its tank, it travels along the Rhine until it reaches Lake Constance. Mark turns to Eva for help.
