In order to call attention to their demands for higher wages at the end of the fishing season, the fisherman from St. Barbara decide to strike. Hull, a well traveled seaman who was able to avoid execution after participating in another uprising, arrives on the coast of St. Barbara and soon becomes a driving force in the uproar. Yet the ship owners mercilessly retaliate. Director Thomas Langhoff, who appears in a small role, adapted the film in 1987 from the same-titled novella by Anna Seghers. Seghers's story, which received the Kleistpreis in 1928, was adapted for the screen by the theater director Erwin Piscator in 1934 in the Soviet Union. (It was the only feature film Pisctor ever made.) In contrast to Piscator, Langhoff, likewise a famous theater director, closely follows Seghers's original. Notes: "Recorded on MDR, 2/16/98". Director: Thomas Langhoff. Actors: "Hansjƒrgen Hƒrrig, Ulrike Krumbiegel, Tobias Langhoff, Ulrich Thein" . Black&White. Country: GDR. Subtitled.
