"Anita G., born in 1937 to Jewish parents, admits in court the theft of a cardigan and is given probation. Her devout probation officer prays with her and brings her to a meditative family in which Anita feels out of place. To make a living Anita tries unsuccessfully to sell recorded language courses. Because she has bought a fur coat on the boss`s account, Anita fears he`ll report her to the the police, so she leaves her job and goes to University, where she doesn`t understand the lectures. Realizing that the university is not the place for her either, she becomes the Ministerial Counselor Pichota`s mistress, and is soon pregnant. The pregnancy causes Pichota to reconsider the the relationship, and they break up without reproaches. Anita wanders along the Rhine until she finally turns herself over to the police.
