The film opens in a German hospital during WWII. Two women, one French and one German, have just given birth. When the German woman's child is killed during a bombing raid, she claims the other infant as her own. A nurse witnesses the abduction, but her pity for a grieving mother prevents her from interferring. The war ends, four years pass, and the French woman returns to Germany to retrieve her child. To this end, she enlists the help of American military authorities, who in turn contact the doctor and nurse who worked with the two mothers in question. Initially, the German woman and the doctor are determined to cover up, but the nurse insists on at last telling the truth. The German woman is ultimately allowed to keep her son so that his life does not become uprooted, though by the end of the film it is not just her child anymore, i.e. she and the French mother come to think of the boy as their child. Director: Frank Beyer. Black and White. Country: GDR. No Subtitles.
