"Rules of the Game" was banned in France for a long time because of its stinging social commentary. On the surface, it's a story about guests at a houseparty for the shooting season. As the story follows three diverse triangles of characters, it frankly delineates the erotic charades of the French leisure class. As the "game" progresses, honour is reduced to discretion.... the idea of happiness fades into a quest for mere amusement. Renoir mordantly satirizes the social and sexual mores of a decadent society near collapse. In the unfeeling world he conveys, no one wins in the accepted social games. Director: Jean Renoir.
