For the sequel to his silent masterpiece, Dr. Mabuse, the Gambler, Fritz Lang (Metropolis, M) conceived and anti-Nazi horror film to unveil Hitler monstrous intentions. In the Testament of Dr. Mabuse, the villainous inmate of an insane asylum plots to crush society in a wave of theft and violence. The madman, who spouts actual Nazi slogans, hypnotizes the asylum director to carry out the fiendish plan after his death. In a strange twist, Nazi progagandist Joseph Goebbels banned the film but then offered the director a job running the German film industry. Within 24 hours, Lang fled the country (his wife and cowriter stayed behind to become a top Nazi screenwriter). Rich with atmostphere, powered with action, and graced by Fritz Arno Wagner brilliant expressionist cinematography, Testament remains one of Lang greatest films.
