This episode began the most popular season of the series, which ranked 21st in the ratings by the end of the year. David Milch`s script won an Emmy, a Humanitas Awards, and a Writers Guild Award. Two murders on the Hill, one notorious and one virtually ignored, bring into question the fairness of the legal system and of Captain Furillo himself. Like the overture in an opera, Sergeant Phil Esterhaus`s flowery opening roll-call scenes served to introduce the themes of each upcoming episode. When actor Michael Conrad died, the show was left without one of its more identifiable features. In this episode the daily crimes and passions of the Hill continue as each member of the precinct comes to grips with the death of their beloved Sergeant Esterhaus. Bates goes undercover as a hooker, Belker goes undercover as a trucker and both Leo and Coffey experience emotional, personal crises. Director: Gregoory Hoblit/Rick Wallace. Actors: Michael Conrad, Daniel J. Travanti, Veronica Hamel . Country: USA.
