While visiting a girls' hostel, Czar Alexander II comes to know the young princess Katja Dolguruki. It is love at first sight -- but the czar is already married. In order to evade courtly gossip, the czar sends Katja to France with a heavy heart. Two years later, when he is received in Paris by Napoleon II, the lovers meet again. When Katja becomes witness to a misguided attempt to assassinate both leaders, the lovers swear never more to separate.
